This project assisted in the construction of 122 houses in the city of Nizamabad, Andhra Pradesh. Households living in informal settlements were given land plots as part of a government relocation scheme and provided a small fund to build their own houses. As a supplement to this, Reall worked in partnership with SSNS to provide loans and technical expertise, bringing in experienced community contractors to assist in the construction phase, and enabling the beneficiaries to complete their houses. Nizamabad was the first SSNS project to be funded purely through revolved funds from earlier Reall projects in India.
The 122 families selected for the project were of Scheduled Castes, considered to be some of the most historically disadvantaged communities in India. The majority worked in the informal sector as daily wage labourers and were selected on their savings history with the local Mahila Milan (women’s federation group), which indicated that they would be able to repay the loan successfully.
The houses themselves were built as single storey structures, with the opportunity to extend vertically in the future. They included a bedroom, hall, kitchen, toilet and bathroom, and were fully equipped with household water and sanitation services.
