In the 1990s the Pune Municipality began demolishing informal housing along the state’s roadsides. 100 of the affected households sought help from Mahila Milan, Pune’s Women’s Federation. Mahila Milan had recently secured land from the Pune Municipality which they were intending to use to build flood rehabilitation housing, but instead proposed for this land to be used to resettle the households affected by the demolition. This formed phase 1 of the project.
Soon after, the Pune Municipality announced plans to build 2,000 units on a greenfield site next to phase 1. The families would come from various locations, including the families affected by flooding. SSNS was awarded a contract for 618 units, split across over 50 three-storey buildings, which formed the remainder of the project.
The work was funded through the VAMBAY scheme, which provides a 50% central government subsidy which is matched by a 50% state or municipal government subsidy.
