This project is situated in Biratnagar, a city located on the south-east border with India and a major hub for trade and commerce. Serving low-income households residing in informal settlements in the city centre, Lumanti provided a 20% guarantee to NMB Bank for loans to project clients. In this way, Lumanti have been able to leverage private finance for clients living on low incomes, and encourage banks to lend to income groups that they previously considered too risky.
All 100 families approved for the project had private land ownership certificates, most of which were owned by women. Detached, single-storey buildings that could be incrementally extended in the future were constructed in existing settlements, with a focus on low cost materials and technology. Lumanti also provided a team of community architects which worked with households to help them design their housing according to their needs.
Clients estimated to sit between 31st and 40th percentiles of incomes in Biratnagar
