Implemented by Lumanti, this project provides affordable rental housing for low-income households, students and single women. Homes consist of studio apartments with built in kitchen space and private bathrooms.
The building accommodates 24 households with each paying NPR 5,000 per month. The rental block is designed to provide short term housing to fill a gap before people transition into permanent homes as their families grow or economic opportunities improve. New tenants are selected by a combination of existing tenants, the municipality and Lumanti, with tenancy limited to an initial term of two years and no more than one renewal. This helps to ensure that the homes remain available for those most in need.
Rental payments cover all maintenance costs for the building, including a full-time member of staff. The project helps demonstrate to the Private Sector that affordable housing is a favourable investment choice which offers commercial viability.
Clients estimated to sit between 11th and 20th percentiles of incomes in Kathmandu
