Reall’s investment in Zima Homes, a women-led housing developer in Nairobi, is supporting the construction of 137 homes combining climate-smart and gender-sensitive design. Zima Homes prioritises women at all stages of project conceptualisation and implementation, including using female construction labourers and adapting worksite practices to align with the needs of female workers. Female ownership is prioritised and 67% of homes sold to date are owned by women.
The Zima Homes brand builds upon past experience within the BuildX team to deliver climate smart, socially impactful buildings with high design standards. The project demonstrates not only reduced construction costs for desirable aspirational homes, but also connect these with innovative housing finance models to make them accessible to lower income households.
The project is designed as a pilot model that is intended to be replicated multiple times over to deliver outstanding urban design for affordable homes.
