This project targeted members of two housing cooperatives (Alfa Youth and Mwanda Housing), providing homes for 33 households. An additional nine serviced plots were also completed, to be marketed and sold by the cooperative members to cross-subsidise the development cost.
Alfa youth members previously resided in the Kwa Rhoda, Lakeview estate and Bondeni in Nakuru town, which are densely populated informal settlements. Mwanda members were previously landless and without formal employment, also living in the densely populated informal settlements of Nakuru Town. All tenants previously resided in unsuitable conditions with little access to safe and reliable water and sanitation services, and relocation offered the opportunity to escape these precarious living situations. To afford the housing they were provided with end user finance by NACHU in the form of micro mortgages, to be repaid within 8 years.
Clients estimated to sit between 61st and 70th percentiles of incomes in Nakuru
