This project is located in the peri-urban area of Nairobi close to a major highway, Kangundo Road, which facilitates easy access to the city centre. The project is the second phase of the NACHU Royal Project, is adjacent to the Gitongu Starehe project and is across the road from the Ngumo Mbega project, which enables a neighbourhood and community to become established. The project serves members from the Royal, Razak and Progressive Housing Cooperatives.
The majority of these cooperative members were previously tenants in Mukuru and Kibera slums, where they operated small informal businesses, selling items such as groceries, general food stuffs, and second-hand clothes. Housing members faced threats of eviction from Mukuru, with many receiving eviction letters, so their relocation to Royal offers sanctuary from a precarious living situation. To afford the housing they were provided with end user finance by NACHU in the form of micro mortgages, to be repaid within 5 years.
Clients estimated to sit between 21st and 30th percentiles of incomes in Nairobi
