With support from Reall, the Municipality of Beira and the Dutch government, Inhamizua is Casa Real’s first housing project. To increase affordability for the poorest clients, Casa Real is offering Casa Basica starter homes for as little as $10K as well as a range of Casa Maior houses with up to three bedrooms to be sold at a profit to allow for cross-subsidy. The first homes were occupied by families living on lower incomes who are buying a home via employer backed mortgages or a rent to buy scheme. All homes are equipped with water, sanitation and energy.

Casa Real are the first organisation in Mozambique to successfully lobby banks to provide mortgages for earners living on low incomes, and have signed an MoU with ABSA Bank to provide clients with mortgages. Mortgage finance is extremely underdeveloped in Mozambique, with only 600 mortgages across the entire population of 30 million, and the ground-breaking nature of this achievement should not be underestimated. Casa Real have also demonstrated highly effective climate-resilient construction with all its houses surviving Cyclone Idai’s 2019 onslaught where 70% of Beira city’s buildings were damaged.
