This project is located in Chitungwiza, a commuter town 25km outside of the capital Harare. As the second phase of Chitungwiza Cooperative development, the project used the existing model from phase 1 as a template for the construction of further units. Single storey core houses were constructed, fully serviced with household water, sanitation and electricity, and with the option of further extension by the homeowner.
The project clients were longstanding members of two cooperatives that served members within the Chitungwiza district and had been saving prior to the project. Developed in partnership with ZINAHCO, funds were lent to the cooperatives which in turn extended individual loans to the clients, allowing the homeowners to purchase the newly constructed units. Clients were required to pay a base repayment of $40 USD a month, which rose to $70 after the family was able to move into their purchased house; an increase made possible as the family no longer had to pay rent on previous accommodation. With the houses built in phases, repayments from units already built were recycled each month to help decrease the need for fresh capital investment.
