This project is located in Chitungwiza, a commuter town 25km outside of Zimbabwe’s capital Harare. Single storey core houses were constructed with the option of further extension by the homeowners, and fully serviced with household water, a flush toilet, and electricity.
The project clients were longstanding members of two cooperatives based in the Chitungwiza district. Developed in partnership with ZINAHCO, funds were lent to the cooperatives, which were in turn able to purchase land using a deposit from member savings and extend individual loans to the clients. This housing finance allowed the homeowners to purchase the newly constructed units. Clients were required to pay a base repayment of $40 USD a month, which rose to $70 after the family was able to move into their purchased house; an increase made possible as the family no longer had to pay rent on previous accommodation. With the houses built in phases, repayments from units already built were recycled each month to help decrease the need for fresh capital investment.
