Project Overview

The Kuyasa Fund has provided clients with loans of mainly between ZAR 5,000 and ZAR 10,000 ($300 – $600 USD) to use for home upgrading purposes. The loans had a reduced interest rate and a repayment period of two years, and were used to fund construction costs for house extensions, improved water and sanitation services, electricity connections, and added security through the purchase of burglar alarms and fences. Cosmetic improvements such as painting, plastering and the addition of new doors and windows were also completed.

Kuyasa clients found that the home improvements added significant value to their property far above the cost of the loan. The project targeted the elderly, women and those that were employed informally and would therefore struggle to receive traditional housing finance through banks. For this reason, over 70% of loan recipients were female and over 80% were pensioners. The majority resided in the cities of Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and George.
