A peer-reviewed academic paper written by Dr Andrew Jones and Dr Lisa Stead from Reall’s Evidence Team has been published and prominently featured in the latest issue of the journal Environment & Urbanization. This is is one of the most widely read, distributed and respected journals in the fields of urban and environmental studies. The article forms part of a wider special issue on housing, and is titled Can people on low incomes access affordable housing loans in urban Africa and Asia? Examples of innovative housing finance models from Reall’s global network.
Written from a practitioner perspective, the article offers new insights on the challenge of unlocking accessible housing finance for people on low incomes in urban Africa and Asia. It does so through case studies of models from Reall’s network of partners in India, the Philippines, Nepal, Mozambique and Pakistan. Reall’s partners demonstrate that decent homes can be delivered at a cost that is accessible for potential low-income homeowners, while proving the viability of lending to borrowers at the bottom of the income pyramid. This is essential for demonstrating the commercial viability and impactful investment opportunity represented by affordable housing in urban Africa and Asia.
